Literacy and Diversity

Teaching children with special concerns
  • The points of chapter 3 are really significant in current situation, especially in western countries, such as America, Canada, and Britain, etc. As a foreign student, English has become my second language and generally become a main way to communicate with my instructors and classmates. In the beginning of foreign studying, I had many embarrassing situations, like cannot describe my purposes to my American friends so I have to look for electronic dictionary, that wasted time too much; sometimes I could use wrong words or phases in normal conversation, I had a really awful memorize of it. It cost me almost one month to eliminate the influence after I explained to my friend and beg for her forgiveness. So I am here to claim my station of diversity in school, which is really important to us(teachers). Diversity has become very popular in current classes, we will meet more and more different background children with their special culture, each of them is unique and they will bring amazing thoughts and behaviors to school. The things we can do are to accept and let other students to understand it, then accept it as we did.
  • This chapter is important because it teaches us that how to responding to cultural diversity, help English language learners communicate at school, how to deal with languages differences in class and be respect for the different cultural backgrounds. In page 68, the author has listed three goals for classrooms, which claims the importances; after these points, the author also listed four points for English language leaners that can be helpful about learning English.
  • For our students can study in a healthy environment that contains positive energy, teachers can make the classroom more close to their culture, such as putting some cultural ornaments; encourage them to explain their own cultural things in front of class.
  • Teachers need to communicate with parents more than anytime. Besides, we need to assess each child as equal by checking their studying progress and daily studying. We need to supply them but using an appropriate way, to beware that not hurting any student's feeling when they face language trouble.
  • Chapter 3 gives several suggestions to deal with English language learners in class and how teacher and other student can help them. As teachers, we need to treat each child as an unique individual; do not let them any unwell feeling at school. Plus, we need to teach other students to learn how to accept different background and cultural students, and let them quickly become a part of unit.
